A single stock market listing could rewrite who sits at the top of India's corporate ladder.
Jio Platforms, the digital arm of Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries, is preparing for an initial public offering that could value the company at nearly ₹10.3 lakh crore. According to a Times of India report published October 16, 2026, this listing could push the Reliance Industries group past Tata Group in combined market value, based on estimates from ET Intelligence data.

Jio IPO valuation and how the Reliance Tata math works
The numbers behind this story are striking. Before Jio's listing, the Reliance Industries group was valued at about ₹18.2 lakh crore. Tata Group's listed companies, including Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors and Tata Steel, were worth around ₹25.5 lakh crore as of October 15, 2026. Once Jio lists, that picture could flip entirely.
At the reported price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share, Jio could be valued at up to ₹10.3 lakh crore. Add that to Reliance Industries' existing worth, and the combined Reliance Industries group value jumps to roughly ₹28.5 lakh crore. That would put Reliance Group about ₹3 lakh crore ahead of Tata Group, based on the calculations cited in the report.
It is worth noting these are group-level comparisons, not single-company numbers. Reliance's total includes Reliance Industries plus the newly listed Jio Platforms. Tata's total adds up all its separately traded companies. The comparison measures stock market value only, not revenue, factories, patents or how much each brand is worth in the real world.

Why Jio's separate listing changes everything for Reliance
Right now, Jio's value sits hidden inside Reliance Industries. Investors buying RIL shares get a mix of oil refining, chemicals, retail stores, media businesses and the telecom and digital operations all bundled together. That bundling often leads to what market watchers call a holding company discount, where the sum is valued less than its individual parts would be worth separately.
An analyst quoted in the Times of India report explained it simply: "Currently, Jio's value is embedded within Reliance Industries. A separate listing will unlock that holding company discount." The same analyst said the combined market value of RIL and Jio Platforms would put "clear daylight" between the Reliance and Tata groups.
Reliance is expected to hold onto about 66.4% of Jio Platforms after the share sale, according to reporting from the Economic Times telecom desk. Nomura estimated this retained stake could add ₹481 to ₹506 per RIL share before factoring in any discount. Apply a 20% holding company discount, and that contribution drops to somewhere between ₹385 and ₹405 per share.
Analysts split on exact numbers but agree on the bigger shift
Not every brokerage agrees on the exact figure. Nomura pegged Jio's likely IPO equity value between ₹9.8 lakh crore and ₹10.3 lakh crore. Motilal Oswal Financial Services came in higher, estimating Jio's worth near ₹11.2 lakh crore, with a possible market value close to ₹11 lakh crore after listing.
Religare Broking took a more cautious approach, applying a 28% to 30% holding company discount to Jio inside its Reliance Industries valuation. Even with that caution, the brokerage projected significant potential upside for Reliance shares once the digital business gets its own public market price tag, according to CNBC-TV18.
These differences matter because they show the final number is still moving. Nothing about Jio's price band, total issue size or listing date has been locked in as of the reports reviewed. What is clear is that every major brokerage expects the listing to meaningfully boost how the market values Reliance as a whole.
What this means for India's biggest companies and investors
If completed at the reported size of around ₹30,188 crore, Jio's IPO would become India's largest-ever public share sale, overtaking Hyundai Motor India's record offering. Some reports placed the fundraising figure slightly higher, at up to ₹30,213 crore, reflecting the kind of small variations expected before final paperwork is filed.
The ripple effects go beyond just Reliance and Tata. A standalone Jio stock price would give investors a direct way to compare it against Bharti Airtel and other telecom players for the first time. It would also test how much appetite Indian and global investors have for a deal of this scale, right as Jio was expected to file its red herring prospectus around October 14 or 15, 2026.
A ranking that could shift again after listing day
It is worth remembering that Tata Group is not losing on every front. Tata was named India's most valuable corporate brand in the Brand Finance India 100 report released in April 2026, valued at $31.6 billion, far ahead of Reliance Industries' standalone brand value of $9.8 billion. Market capitalisation and brand value are simply different measuring sticks.
The real test comes once Jio actually starts trading. Share prices move daily, and so will this ranking. Reliance Industries' own stock price, along with swings in TCS, Tata Motors and Tata Steel, will keep adjusting the gap between the two groups. For now, the numbers point toward a historic shift in India's corporate pecking order, but the final word will come only after Jio rings the opening bell.
