Sensex swung wildly during the Closing Auction Session on August 27, 2026, crashing over 2,200 points before recovering. The index closed 539 points lower amid trader outcry over expiry-day volatility.

Sensex crashed over 2,200 points and rebounded nearly 2,000 within minutes during the first monthly F&O expiry under BSE's new closing auction rules.

The BSE Sensex witnessed extreme intraday volatility on Thursday, August 27, 2026, during the Closing Auction Session, a 20-minute window introduced to determine official closing prices for F&O-eligible stocks and indices. Within about five minutes of the session opening, between 3:18 pm and 3:23 pm, the Sensex crashed by more than 2,200 points, before recovering nearly 2,000 points over the following seven minutes, according to a Times of India report. The index ultimately closed at 76,934, down 539 points from Wednesday's close. The episode marked the first monthly expiry of derivatives contracts on the BSE since the Closing Auction Session, known as CAS, was introduced, and it triggered what the Times of India described as social media outcry among traders and market watchers.

The wild swings coincided with the monthly expiry of futures and options contracts linked to the Sensex and the Bankex, BSE's banking index. Both indices experienced sharp movement during the closing window, amplifying the impact on settlement prices for expiring derivatives contracts. Bloomberg separately characterized the episode as a "flash crash," reporting that the Sensex briefly plunged about 3% during the auction, sliding to around 74,983.19 points, roughly 2.9% below its 3:15 pm level of about 77,182.91, before rebounding by the close.

Sharp Divergence Between Sensex And Nifty During The Auction

While the Sensex experienced dramatic swings, the Nifty 50 on the National Stock Exchange moved far less during the same window. Between 3:18 pm and 3:22 pm, the Nifty slid a little over 100 points, a fraction of the movement seen on the BSE benchmark. This divergence continues a pattern observed since CAS was introduced, where Nifty and Sensex can move differently in the closing window because they are calculated from different stock baskets and traded on separate exchanges.

Secondary coverage from MSN described the Sensex's indicative close during the auction showing a potential decline of around 2,400 points at one stage, before the index recovered to settle near 76,933.59. The gap between the pre-auction level at 3:15 pm and the eventual closing price underscored how sharply settlement values could shift within the short auction window, a dynamic that has become a recurring theme since the mechanism's rollout in early August 2026.

Options Traders Hit By Extreme Price Swings

The volatility in the underlying indices produced dramatic moves in related options contracts. A Moneycontrol report on the same expiry day noted that a BSE Bankex put option trading at around ₹6 spiked to about ₹1,000 within minutes during the Closing Auction Session. Separately, a Sensex 77,200 put option reportedly jumped from roughly ₹54 to about ₹499 in around ten minutes, between 3:19 pm and 3:27 pm, according to MSN's coverage of the expiry session.

These examples illustrate how thin liquidity and order imbalances during the auction window can generate outsized price shocks in options tied to the indices, particularly on expiry days when settlement values are directly determined by the closing auction. Traders holding positions in these contracts faced rapid and significant shifts in value within a matter of minutes, well after regular continuous trading in the underlying stocks had ended at 3:15 pm.

The Closing Auction Session Mechanism Under Scrutiny

The Closing Auction Session was introduced by SEBI and implemented by Indian exchanges in early August 2026 as a new method for determining official closing prices of F&O-eligible cash equities and indices. Under the revised structure, normal cash market trading in F&O-eligible stocks ends at 3:15 pm, after which a roughly 20-minute auction window, running approximately from 3:15 pm to 3:35 pm, is used to discover final closing prices.

Since its debut, CAS has produced several volatile sessions. News18 and Times of India reported that Nifty jumped over 200 points in the final minutes of trading during CAS in one earlier session, while Sensex rose only modestly, confusing traders. The Hindu BusinessLine reported that Nifty's official closing value swung sharply for a second consecutive session shortly after CAS launched, intensifying debate over the mechanism's impact on weekly derivatives settlement in thinly traded markets.

The August 27 episode adds to this pattern of scrutiny. Reuters and other outlets had previously reported that the new auction mechanism made traders nervous ahead of derivatives expiries, citing concerns about order-book imbalances. A Livemint analysis separately referenced a SEBI order in an earlier Sensex expiry case, where a foreign portfolio investor and its broker allegedly used CAS to cause artificial gyrations in the index, generating wrongful gains of about ₹2.96 crore, providing broader context for why traders remain sensitive to large auction-window moves. As of the coverage on August 27, there was no reported immediate regulatory rollback of CAS, though the episode has intensified pressure on SEBI and the exchanges to review auction design and risk disclosures for derivatives participants.
